![]() In this image, you can see image A contains no detail but all the colours. A high frequency edge, that has contrast, gives the illusion of sharpness. With a digital signal (after being converted from analogue), we can also separate the low (soft tones) and highs (the details) for processing. Here’s an example of what these two layers look like in Photoshop. In audio, we can separate the lows (bass) from the mids and highs with various speakers and their placement in a room. In one layer we see the colour but no detail and in the other, we have the image detail but no colour. ![]() None of the above are finals, just treatments. In Frequency Separation all we do is separate these two things into two separate layers. (RawTherapee and Wavelets) (Not my image. Pricing Topaz Detail costs 39.98 at the time of writing this post. Overall, I have used Topaz Detail for several years on majority of my photos and I’m quite happy with it. I worked up a treatment but we had other good responses so I didn't answer in that thread, but here you can see the type of control it gives. My actual workflow for sharpening and detailing an image is to use Photoshop Smart Sharpen with a mask for edge sharpening and use Topaz Detail for detailing. GIMP and (optional/additional) Wavelet Decompose (WD) offers somewhat different processes and results. The Median Filter can be employed to further reduce fine detail and smooth color transitions, making it easier for posterization algorithms (in other software). Thinking further outside the box, possibly use RawTherapee and Contrast by Detail Levels wavelets at 5 levels to help reduce detail at higher frequencies (where the fine details exist) leaving the coarse details including basic shapes.
